Hui Malama Ola Na ‘Oiwi and the Susan G. Komen Hawaii Foundation will sponsor the second annual E Ola Kakou! (Generational Connections), an event honoring breast cancer survivors and their ohana, and educating those at risk of developing cancer.
This fun, educational and informative event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Hilo Bayfront. In addition to health information, agencies will offer free clinical breast exams and referrals for mammography exams. They will help arrange financial support for mammograms for those women without health insurance or with only basic coverage health insurance. Plus, they’ll answer any questions regarding your health.
And, as part of this fun day, everyone is invited to join in the short canoe races planned. Teams will be formed on the spot for many of the races, such as the “Survivors and Ohana” division. Local paddling clubs are invited to bring their teams for friendly competition, and community agencies are encouraged to form a team and come compete. Outrigger canoes, paddles and a steersperson will be available for each team, and life jackets will be available through water safety volunteers with Palekana Kai.
Please register before 11 a.m. in any of these divisions: Division 1 — Survivors &Ohana; Division 2 — Community Agencies; Division 3 — Local Paddling Clubs.
“Come be part of this fun-filled day, and help celebrate and honor cancer survivors and their supporters,” said spokeswoman Leimomi Shearer. For more information, call Shearer at 969-9220.
